Haberfield World War Two Roll of Honour

England declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939. As a dominion of the British Empire, Australia was automatically at war.

Australia declared war on Japan on 8 December 1941 following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. This was the first time Australia declared war independently of Great Britain.

Over 1,000 residents of Haberfield enlisted, 73 of whom were women. Whilst the women who enlisted during World War I were nurses, this was not the case during World War II. Many enlisted in the Women’s Army Service and the RAAF.

The list includes men who served in the Volunteer Defence Forces. These were usually older men, or those who did not meet active service criteria.

Many of the enlistees on this list had previously served during World War I.

Thirty men were confined as prisoners of war both in Europe and Asia. Eight died whilst held as POWs.

Twenty men lost their lives during the conflict.
