World War II (28 May 1940 - 2 May 1941 Killed in Action)
Arthur Crossingham was born in Macksville New South Wales on 8 October 1918, one of five children to Arthur Crossingham and Meta Nelson.
A warehouseman, he enlisted in Paddington NSW on 28 May 1940 and gave his father’s address as 18 Nichols Avenue.
Arthur was taken on strength with the 2/1 Pioneer Battalion on 17 June and appointed as Temporary Corporal the same day.
On 21 July he was appointed as Acting Sergeant.
The unit embarked from Melbourne Victroia aboard HMAT Nieuw Zealand on 1 October, disembarking in Palestine on 5 November. On 4 January 1941 his temporary rank was terminated and he reverted to Corporal.
Between 25 January and 10 February Arthur spent time in hospital with catarrhal tonsillits in Alexandria Egypt. He then spent time in a convalescent hospital in Moascar.
Following his discharge on 1 March he was transferred to a staging camp and training unit.
Back with the 2/1 Pioneer Battalion he moved to a forward area, and on 2 May 1941, he lost his life in Tobruk Libya.
His father requested and received duplicate medals in 1964.
His brothers Francis and Kevan also served, as did their father Arthur.
He was laid to rest in the Tobruk War Cemetery in Libya.
